Each
of Mahler’s gigantic symphonic creations is a deeply personal
statement, a kind of private confession. In his Ninth Symphony, Mahler
bares his soul, forcing us to share the terrifying intensity of his
visions and leaving us emotionally exhausted by the end. At the other
extreme of Mahler’s emotional spectrum are his exquisite, intimate,
deeply personal songs, which include five Rückert-Lieder.
